Re: five outings in Bourges, not one more.
Cher Jacques,
That is French for “Dear Jacques”: Jacques Cœur, merchant, treasurer to King Charles VII and, five and a half centuries on, still the most famous name in Bourges.
Your palace still stands on rue Jacques-Cœur, and your town has never been livelier. Concerts, theatre, exhibitions, markets, balls, talks: every week Bourges offers more than anyone could see, even a man who once kept the King’s accounts.
So I write to you. Every Thursday, a letter with five outings for the weekend, chosen one by one, and not one more: enough to make up your mind quickly, and well, whether you are after a concert, a family day out or a good excuse to wander through the marshes.
The letter goes out in French. This English edition is for those reading over your shoulder — visitors, newcomers, anyone in town for a while: dates, places and prices in English, each event’s name and description left just as its organisers wrote them.
I remain, cher Jacques, most valiantly yours.
